How Arthritis Sufferers May Benefit from Chiropractic

Recently, SportsCare Center Huntington Beach has seen a number arthritis patients seeking chiropractic care after seeing a medical doctor. They want to be treated and address issues, but their medical doctor said they shouldn’t have chiropractic adjustments because they have arthritis or arthritic changes in their neck or lower back.

Without going too deep into chiropractic philosophy or joint physiology, nothing could be further from the truth.

How Arthritis Develops

A healthy joint is one that is free moving and free of excessive biomechanical stress. When joints get locked and are unable to move freely, they can’t get properly nourished. The nourishment of the joint cartilage depends on movement to promote the process of imbibition, which is the taking up of synovial fluid.  Even more simplified, when we move, joint cartilage gets squeezed so bad stuff gets pushed out and good stuff goes in to supply the cartilage with necessary nutrients for growth and repair. (This is another reason regular exercise is important for health, and why we added yoga classes to our practice, but that’s another blog post.)

When joints are locked and unable to move freely, imbibition occurs less frequently or not at all.  Over time, joints degenerate because they are unable to get the nutrients to rebuild or repair. Eventually, the joints begin to show signs of arthritic changes.

To make matters worse, when spinal bones get shifted out of place, two things happen:

  1.  The normal movement of the joint decreases.
  2. There are increased biomechanical stresses placed on the joint.

Excessive stress speeds degeneration because the forces cause joint cartilage to wear out at an accelerated rate. Eventually, the accelerated degeneration causes pain, and when x-rays are taken, the joint looks arthritic because of advanced stress.

GOOD NEWS

Chiropractic adjustments repair subluxations (misaligned joints), increase joint range of motion, and reduce excessive biomechanical stress.  They also remove nerve pressure, alleviate pain, relieve local muscle spasms (trigger points), release endorphins, and foster a sense of well-being throughout the body.

While chiropractic care can’t reverse arthritic changes, it can stop or slow the degenerative process.  Getting regular chiropractic care starting at an early age can prevent arthritic changes in the first place.

As you know, Sportscare Center added yoga therapy to its services in February 2015. Yoga complements your current athletic training by bettering balance, enhancing endurance, increasing flexibility, and building strength. Anecdotally, people who’ve taken the Re-Energize class report increased strength and weight loss. People who’ve taken the Relax class tell us they sleep like a log after taking the class.

Yoga also fits well into a wellness lifestyle. How many times have you heard “eat healthier and move more” from your doctor, your trainer, your chiropractor? Each person is promoting two things you can do immediately to improve your health and quality of life. Yoga is a great way to enhance wellness and meet the “move more” requirement.

Oh, My Aching Head! Try These 8 Headache Relievers First

Into every life a few aches and pains fall.  According to the World Health Organization, 1 in 20 people in the developed world suffer with a daily tension headache. Before you reach for a bottle of pain killers, try these pain relievers first.

Understanding the Types of Primary Headaches

There is a lot of confusion over the types of primary headaches, those not caused by another issue, e.g. sinus headaches.  Many people claim to have a migraine, when what they really have is a tension headache.  The level of pain does not determine the diagnosis.

A tension headache is the most common type of headache and is characterized by pain that affects the whole head. Some sufferers experience the pain in the back of the head; others feel it across the forehead.  Some people report a sensation like a tight band around the head or muscle tension in the neck and shoulders.  Even though tension headache sufferers may  be sensitive to light and sound, tension headaches tend to grow in intensity, which gives sufferers time to counter. They are typically not incapacitating.

There is a misconception that “migraine” means severe headache.  While migraines can be painful, the name refers to a type of headache. Migraines result from specific physiologic changes in the brain that lead to pain. Those changes are fluctuations in certain neurotransmitters, which are chemicals that send messages between brain cells.  Regular hormone fluctuations can be a trigger.  Then again, so can consumption of certain foods or a simple change in barometric pressure.  Migraine headaches are associated with symptoms such as: nausea, vomiting, light sensitivity, blind spots, pain on one side of the head, numbness or weakness in the limbs. After puberty, migraines affect more women than men.

Cluster headaches tend to occur daily for periods of a week or more with long spans with no symptoms between episodes.  They are caused by a sudden release of histamines and serotonin in the brain.  Sufferers may experience symptoms like sharp pain behind one eye, one eye gets watery or inflamed, and/or the sufferer experiences a runny nose.  This type of headache affects more men than women.

Headache remedies to try before reaching for a pill

If you’re like many of our patients, you prefer to only use medication as a last resort.  Here are some remedies and treatments to try before reaching for that pain killer.  (Did you know that overusing pain killers can make subsequent pain feel more intense?)

1 – Drink 16-32 oz of  Water

Cigna Health reports that 75 percent of  Americans are chronically dehydrated.  Health Factors suggests that 80% of all headaches are caused by dehydration. The idea is that dehydration causes blood volume to drop, which results in less oxygen rich blood flow to the brain and dilation of blood vessels and triggers the sensation of pain.  So make sure you and your children drink enough pure water daily!  What’s enough? Try this formula: Body weight/2 = Minimum number of ounces to drink daily.

2 – Essential Oil

A couple drops of peppermint oil could put your headache on the run.

Some headache sufferers experience relief by rubbing a bit of peppermint oil on their temples and on their necks.

3 – Cold Therapy

Apply a cold compress to the area for 15 minutes to slow blood flow and reduce inflammation. (Conversely, others find relief with warm compress therapy, but this is Dr. Duddey Sportscare, where we cheer for Elsa in Frozen, Frosty the Snowman, and the Snow Miser!)

4 – Peppermint Tea

If your headaches include a little nausea, go for a cup of peppermint tea.  Peppermint has been used for millennia to calm muscles in the gastrointestinal tract.  And herbal tea will also help rehydrate you.

5 – Acupuncture

Acupuncture effectively relieves chronic headaches.

While it may take a few treatments to dial it in, acupuncture can help chronic headache sufferers by reducing muscle tension and  encouraging the release of painkilling endorphins.

6 – Activity

If you’ve been sitting in the same position for hours, it’s time to get up and get the blood flowing! Stretch periodically throughout the day

Your chiropractor can use a variety of treatments to offer relief to the headache sufferer.  At a minimum, your chiropractor adjust your spine relieving any impinged nerves or rotated vertebrae.  Massage or physical therapy treatments may be added to address muscle tightness and spasms to offer relief.

8 – Coffee

Sipping a small cup of coffee can provide the right amount of caffeine  to block the neurotransmitter adenosine, which causes blood vessels to dilate and create pain-causing pressure. Caffeine constricts those vessels and relieves pain.  This method is effective for people who consume about 150 mg of caffeine (about a 12 ounce coffee) daily. If you are a coffee achiever, your blood vessels may not be as responsive.

Treatment v Prevention: Is Your “Check Body” Light Illuminated?

 

 

Prevent pain rather than react to it.

Does it take your Check Body light to be illuminated to seek care? There’s a better way. Beat pain to the punch. Prevention is preferable to treatment.

Do you run to the doctor only when you feel pain? This is the treatment path.  Sadly, many people see their health care providers as people to treat symptoms. They only adopt healthier habits after symptoms occur or they are admonished by their doctors. Even then, many on Team Treatment only maintain their healthy ways until the symptoms disappear, then they slide into their old habits.

In my mind this is like only getting your vehicle serviced when the “Check Engine” light is illuminated.

I believe it is preferable to prevent pain than treat it later.

Maintaining health is an ongoing process. Just like it is better to prevent car problems with regular maintenance, it is better to prevent injury rather than to treat it once it happens. It involves preparing for activity, activity itself, good diet, and good preventative treatment.

Would you consider yourself fit if you only complete one workout or enjoy one healthy meal? Certainly not. Most people realize that regular, ongoing exercise and enjoying healthy foods for most meals and snacks are critical to improving and maintaining physical fitness.

One of the most frequent questions about chiropractic care is “If you really fixed what’s ailing me, why do I have to keep coming back?” It’s a great question.

Once the pain that brought you in is addressed, life goes on. A chiropractic maintenance program addresses the day-to-day conditions that caused your pain in the early stages, many times before you experience discomfort, and maintain the repair.

Simply put, daily wear and tear takes its toll on cars, homes, and even our bodies. Regular maintenance is what allows cars to run 250,000 miles, homes to stand for hundreds of years, and bodies to stay in optimal condition.

Most of the conditions we treat at Sportscare have rather mundane stories behind them. Most people have a strong side and a weak side. The strong side gets a lot of use, whereas the weak side is there to balance us out in pictures. All but one muscle works with an opposing partner, e.g., the bicep has the tricep. The challenge with that is adjustments made to the weak side can be pulled out of alignment by the strong side. Regular maintenance levels the playing field so that the weak side can strengthen, be a better partner, and hold the adjustments longer.
